Please sir, can I have some more?

Feeding GreedyOut of the blue, without warning, another cow had twins. Luckily the birth went much smoother than the previous one I told you about.
But twins are tricky and it usually means trouble. Dear mother-cow didn't have enough milk to feed both of the calves. In order for the calves to survive they additional milk: bottle feeding!

I graciously offered my help and thus became co-parent to two sweet little calves.
To be honest, I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. I thought it would be easy breezy and lots of fun.
I didn't realize I would be wrestling with a calf forcefully trying to shove the teat in his mouth and end up covered in milk.

Naming my new children was a very easy job. The brown female (on the photo) loved drinking from the bottle. Even after two litres she would want more. She would nibble on my overalls, biff me, suck on my hands and look at me with her big brown eyes as if to say "Please, can I have some more?".
It was a no brainer: I named her Greedy.

Her brother, however, was not an easy drinker. No sir.
He didn't want more; he wanted less. He wanted to be left alone.
I had to manhandle him and forcefully stick the teat in his mouth. And still he didn't drink. He would chew on it a little and turn his head almost upside down to get rid of it, spilling milk everywhere. Afterwards he would look like I had just peed all over his birthdaycake.
For obvious reasons, I named him Grumpy.

Every day after breakfast and once again just before tea time I am a busy parent: weighing out the milk powder, measuring the right amount of water at a temperature of 40 degrees and mixing it all together. Armed with a 'speedy feeder' I go out to find my two little rascals.
I usually start off with Grumpy, hoping not to be spotted by Greedy because she will make my job even harder. She would come and try to steal the bottle away from her brother, or suck my hands or push her head against mine: all quite distracting.

Although I suspect that Greedy only loves me for my milk, I do love taking care of her. I cover her in hugs and all the motherly love I can give every day. Maybe one day she will thank me for it and not look at me with those big brown eyes as if to say...

"Please, can I have some more?"
